For our next Leveraging Change Speaker Series, we will look at the city of Burlington’s recent unveiling of their roadmap to reach net-zero energy by 2030. Join other Energy Action Network members in conversation with Darren Springer and Jen Green from the Burlington Electric Department to hear an overview of this ambitious initiative and discuss opportunities and constraints in implementation.

On September 9th, 2019, Mayor Miro Weinberger, joined by Burlington Electric Department (BED) General Manager Darren Springer, City Director of Sustainability Jennifer Green, and other stakeholders, released the City’s Net Zero Energy Roadmap. More than a year in the making, the Roadmap studies what it will take for Burlington to accomplish its goal to become a Net Zero Energy city by 2030, and identifies four key pathways to get there. At the same time as it released the Roadmap, the City promoted a slate of new programs and initiatives designed to help Burlington achieve this ambitious climate goal.

This event will be an opportunity to learn more about how the city arrived at this set of strategies and engage in discussion with the Burlington Electric Department about what it will take to implement them.

Darren Springer is Chief Operating Officer and Manager for Strategy and Innovation at Burlington Electric Department. In that role, he leads the Center for Innovation which includes policy and planning and energy services. He currently is also a Climate Change and Renewable Energy Policy Fellow at the University of Vermont Center for Research on Vermont.Darren Springer was appointed and confirmed as General Manager of the Burlington Electric Department in October 2018. Formerly, Darren served as Burlington Electric Department’s Chief Operating Officer and led the Center for Innovation team which includes the Policy & Planning, Finance, Information Technology and Energy Services divisions.Prior to joining BED, Darren served as Chief of Staff for the Office of Governor Peter Shumlin. Before working in the Governor’s Office, Darren was appointed as Deputy Commissioner at the Vermont Public Service Department, leading the advancement of the 2014 net metering law and 2015 renewable energy standard.

Jennifer Green is the Director of Sustainability and Workforce Vitality at Burlington Electric Department. Jennifer’s work involves efforts to transition Burlington to net zero energy in the thermal and transportation sectors and in this capacity, supports, designs and implements projects within Burlington Electric Department, including work across city offices, and with stakeholders throughout Burlington, and beyond. Jennifer joined the BED team after several years in the City’s Community and Economic Development Office, were she oversaw the City’s sustainability plan and the Climate Action Plan. Upon moving to Vermont, Jennifer consulted at the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation where she helped write the energy efficiency utility proposal that would eventually lead to the creation of Efficiency Vermont.
