Vermonters use a lot of energy – we live in a cold climate and need to heat our homes. And, living in a rural state, we often drive long distances to work, school, and for services. Some households spend over a QUARTER of their household income on energy – mostly on fossil fuels with volatile prices.

Energy costs create a significant financial burden for all Vermonters, and particularly for households and families who can least afford it. This map shows where the highest TOTAL energy burdens – the share of household income spent on heat, electricity and transportation – are in Vermont.
